It looks like Rex Springston of the Richmond Times Dispatch had the same thing on his mind I did.
His article "Howls over dog-hunting: Some fear Va. may be moving to ban or restrict sport" appeared in the newspaper the same day I posted my annual piece on using dogs for deer hunting. Springston's article goes into a lot more detail about the challenges faced by practioners of this time-honored Virginia tradition than I could, and I think it's really cool that the Times Dispatch put it on the front page.
Meanwhile, I just got a call from my Uncle Tom who, unlike me, was able to make the trip to King William County to hunt deer with hounds and our Uncle Jim. My cousin Tom went too and of course he killed a doe on the Saturday afternoon drive (Each time the dogs are turned out it's called a "drive, and each time my cousin goes hunting he gets a deer.)
"We really missed you, especially on that last drive," Uncle Tom said. "That was probably the best drive I've ever been on."
Hearing about what a great trip it was makes it even tougher that I was unable to go. But I'm glad the other guys had a good time, and I look forward to hearing more about it when I see Tom and Tom on Christmas Day!
